No eBook available Amazon. Marcus and Eddie are best friends. They're also stars on the basketball court, where they're known as Black and White. Race has never been an issue: Marcus is black, Eddie is white, but it doesn't matter. Until they start to pull stickups for extra pocket cash and the gun they're using goes off. Now Marcus is going to jail and Eddie is going to college, even though Eddie is the one who fired the gun.

Can you think of any people that you have known along the way who have made very bad decisions that have caused them and their families great pain for many years to come? What were those poor decisions? I am thinking of the famous case of the Glen Ridge football players whose indiscretions followed them for years and years and the two boys who set the fire a Seton Hall anumber of years ago. What might Marcus and Eddie have done other than "steal from others" and "hold people hostage" in order to gain the items that they wanted I think that you have done a wonderful job in pointing out Why were these two young men were short sighted, however why would you suggest that Marcus implicate Eddie?

Volponi's Rikers excellent novel has it all: authentic characters, a thought-provoking plot and heartbreaking drama. As Marcus says, they've gotten "past all that racial crap," but the novel makes it clear that the rest of society hasn't. Short on cash, the boys stick up a few strangers using Eddie's grandfather's gun, which accidentally discharges during their third robbery, grazing an African-American man's head. In alternating first-person narratives, the two describe the aftermath of the events. Marcus is arrested first because the victim recognizes him as a passenger on the public bus he drives. The cops soon connect the dots and figure out Eddie is "the shooter," but the evidence against him is only circumstantial.

Thank you! Marcus is black and Eddie white in a multicultural Long Island neighborhood. However, off the court they have decided to supplement their income by holding up strangers for money for senior activities and the latest athletic shoes. Consequences for everyone unfold and escalate in rapid-fire fashion. Hugely discussable. There was a problem adding your email address. Please try again.

Paul Volponi's Black and White Essay

I was inspired to write Black and White , a novel about two Long Island City High School basketball stars and best friends who thought they'd "put all that racial crap behind us till we were almost like real blood-brothers," by several very real experiences in New York City. From , I taught adolescents awaiting trial on Rikers Island to read and write. The job was incredibly rewarding, and eye opening. Unfortunately, one of the most striking elements on Rikers Island is race. The inequities of the criminal justice system, including who can afford the best lawyer and who can make bail, has deemed that an overwhelming majority of inmates there are African-American. The protagonists in Black and White , Marcus Brown Black and Eddie Russo White , come in contact with that system when they put their sure-shot college scholarships at risk by staging a series of stickups to afford trendy new basketball kicks. But once they get caught, their storybook friendship faces a new kind of reality.
