Jonah was a prophet who ran away from God. He set to sea, and ended up inside a big fish. Some say it was a whale - and for that reason the story is sometimes called Jonah and the Whale. Long ago, there lived a man called Jonah, the son of Amittai — which means Truth. A son of Truth, and a prophet, Jonah often heard the word of the Lord God. This gift was not one that he appreciated at all, far from it — for although the truth will enlighten us, all too often it will alarm us first. Go to Nineveh, the great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness has come up before me.

A long, long time ago there was a man called Jonah who believed in God. One day God gave him a message, and told him he was to travel quite a long way to a city called Nineveh. God told Jonah to go to this city and warn them that God was angry with them. But Jonah was too scared to do what God told him to do, and he ran away in the opposite direction. When he got to the coast of the land which we now know as Israel, he went to the town of Joppa now called Jaffa which had a port where ships leave from, and he got on a boat going a long way away down the Mediterranean Sea. When they were well out in the sea, God sent a strong storm with winds so strong and waves so big, that they were really worried that the wooden sailing boat would fall to bits. When Jonah was sound asleep in the bottom of the boat, the sailors threw overboard anything they could to try and make the ship lighter.

Jonah and the whale is a well-known narrative about what it means to be a real prophet and what happens when you refuse to do what God has asked of you. Upon receiving an instruction from God to tell the wicked people of Nineveh to change their ways or risk destruction, Jonah runs away. To be honest, can you blame him? On board a boat, God causes a terrible storm. Jonah knows it is only by being thrown overboard that he will save his fellow passengers. Jonah hits the water, having been thrown overboard at his own request, by his fellow sailors. Instead of drowning however, God aims to teach Jonah a lesson by sending an animal to swallow him whole.

The Ninevites were mean and violent so of course Jonah was afraid of them. Jonah knew God would save them anyway, but Jonah wanted no part in helping them. Instead, Jonah boarded a ship in his attempt to escape God and sail away from Nineveh. Jonah must have forgotten there was nowhere to run or hide from God. The wind began to blow strongly, and the ship was on the verge of sinking!

He is the eponymous central figure of the Book of Jonah , in which he is called upon by God to travel to Nineveh and warn its residents of impending divine wrath. Instead, Jonah boards a ship to Tarshish. Caught in a storm, he orders the ship's crew to cast him overboard, whereupon he is swallowed by a giant fish. Three days later, after Jonah agrees to go to Nineveh, the fish vomits him out onto the shore. Jonah successfully convinces the entire city of Nineveh to repent, but waits outside the city in expectation of its destruction. God shields Jonah from the sun with a plant , but later sends a worm to cause it to wither. When Jonah complains of the bitter heat, God rebukes him.

Jonah and the Big Fish

The story of Jonah and the Whale, one of the oddest accounts in the Bible, opens with God speaking to Jonah , son of Amittai, commanding him to preach repentance to the city of Nineveh. Jonah found God's order unbearable. Not only was Nineveh known for its wickedness, but it was also the capital of the Assyrian empire , one of Israel's fiercest enemies. Jonah, a stubborn fellow, did just the opposite of what he was told. He went down to the seaport of Joppa and booked passage on a ship to Tarshish, heading directly away from Nineveh.
