The most significant design change with the TaylorMade's new M3 and M4 drivers is a twist on bulge and roll. (Photos courtesy of TaylorMade).

Rory McIlory has also managed to pick up some more distance with the M3 over the previous M2 model… like he needed more yards! The tech guys at TaylorMade said even though the M3 was created with the Tour player in mind, DJ and Rahm were picking up fractionally more ball speed with the M4. The new buzzwords and tech are Hammerhead Technology and Twist Face. I headed up to The Track, Meydan Golf along with the eGolf Megastore team for the TaylorMade session to find out how they both performed on the TrackMan and it made interesting reading. In addition, the M4 carried four yards further than the M2 model. The ball stayed in the air a good second longer and my miss to the left was substantially less.

Their legitimately updated and improved designs got stuck in the middle of an Epic year, after all. As explained to GOLFTEC during a recent visit to TaylorMade HQ in Carlsbad, the company compiled a massive amount of shot data to pinpoint the location of off-center hits and the path of the club accompanying those misses. But if my anecdotal experience can at least shed some light on the performance of this new technology, it does seem to help mitigate the misses. This was especially notable with the M3 driver, which I found to be a big-time improvement in miss performance vs. Without a doubt, though, I was surprised on more than a few of my not-so-great swings which saw the ball still fly high and MUCH straighter than the expectation. Splitting the weights provides the ultimate in forgiveness.

The new TaylorMade M3 and M4 family of woods are led by a pair of drivers that seek to change the technology landscape of the category. But unlike others who have stretched the boundaries of new materials and construction techniques and mass properties, these new drivers are looking to mine something potentially deeper: data. The idea of bulge and roll is that the negative effects of spin and launch on off-center hits are counteracted by the proper face curvature. This is particularly true for bulge, which curves toe and heel shots that are launching with sidespin back toward the centerline for increased accuracy. Crediting research with Foresight Sports launch monitors that allowed engineers to match multiple elements of clubhead information with downrange dispersion, the numbers showed that shots hit high across the face tended to curve back too far to the left of center, while shots hit low on the face tended to curve back too far right of center for a right-handed swing, the opposite would be true for a left-handed swing.

There is nothing like the instant improvement you see in your golf game when you put a new set of irons in your bag. Sometimes that improvement can last a couple of rounds, or other times it can last a couple of years! As players, we are all searching for the latter, but that even includes the manufacturers. TaylorMade has been at the forefront in technology as it pertains to their M series drivers and we've seen those advancements trickle down to their various new designs in irons as well. While the P series irons have been designed with better players in mind, the M series has the mid-to-high handicapper or golfers who are seeking to generate additional distance consistently with their approach shots.
