This fabulous series of books are written specifically for early readers and their humour, carefully scripted text and comic book, conversational style make them easily the most engaging beginning reader series I have seen. The books feature two primary characters — an elephant named Gerald and a pig called Piggie, and it is their wonderfully honest friendship that engages the heart and mind of the young child. The characters communicate through simple dialogue shared in large speech bubbles. The storylines are amusing to kids which makes them engaging, motivating the child to read. As a guide, the books are great for children who are just starting to read on their own through to a second grade reading level. The use of high frequency words and plenty of repetition in the text but not in a boring way!
I highly recommend all of the Elephant and Piggie books. They are fun, easy to navigate, and have no superfluous words or details in the illustrations , making it easy for new readers to focus on what's important and to enjoy the reading experience. They also stress the value of friendship and getting along with others. The Elephant and Piggie books are fun to read aloud to younger children who love the funny stories about the two friends. I recommend the books for ages and especially beginning readers from years old. The 25 Elephant and Piggie books by Mo Willems, which are each 64 pages long, revolve around the friendship of Elephant and Piggie. Elephant, whose name is Gerald, tends to be cautious and pessimistic while his best friend, Piggie, is quite different.
Early readers learn about the ups and downs and ins and outs of friendship with the unlikely best friends, Gerald and Piggie. 13 Elephant and Piggie Books for Your Classroom Library Reading level. G. Paperback Book.

It's the same level--just some schools use the one book leveling system and others use the other. In general, kids read books on this level in first grade. Piggie and his elephant friend, Gerald, are back this time to play outdoors in rain and in sun. Their unlikely friendship is patient, gently humorous, and reflective of friendship — regardless of age or species! After all, music changes the listener, provides inspiration, and more…just because. This fresh saga of how music has stretched over centuries to inspire a new composer begins with Beethoven and ends with the now-grown child who was inspired. Snake asks to play catch with elephant and Piggie but gets beaned by the ball as he has no arms with which to catch it. The friends come up with a creative solution for them all to play catch. Cartoon illustrations are as clear as the speech bubbles in this funny addition to the series.
