Find Out About Chest Pain After Eating. Why Does it Happen?and how to break or sprain your ankle without pain
I was eating some dinner yesterday and noticed that it hurt when I swallow in my chest. Like right in the middle of my chest. It is still happening today. Why would my chest hurt when I swallow? The fact that the pain only occurs with swallowing suggest that you probably have some irritation or inflammation in your esophagus, which is the tube that connects your mouth to your stomach. Everything you swallow has to pass down your esophagus and, therefore, if it is irritated, the very act of swallowing can cause pain.
When you swallow foods or liquids, they pass from your mouth to your stomach through a tube called the esophagus. With a burp, air from your stomach rises through the esophagus to reach your mouth. However, your esophagus is not just a passive conduit that allows the back-and-forth transfer of substances. It is an active, muscular organ that contracts to push materials in the appropriate direction and contains nerve fibers that communicate with your brain. Various problems with your esophagus can cause chest pain when you swallow or burp.
Eating has become a very unpleasant experience for you. Every time you swallow your food, you get a sharp pain in your chest. What is causing this pain, and is there any way to treat it? If you have pain in your chest whenever you swallow, you may have a condition called esophagitis. This is an inflammation of the esophagus, the muscular tube that connects the throat to the stomach. Esophagitis has a number of possible causes, including acid reflux , infections, allergies , and reactions to some medicines. Not only would you have swallowing pain, but you might also have difficulty swallowing, food might get stuck in your esophagus, or you might get heartburn.
Gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, occurs when the lower esophageal sphincter LES does not close properly and stomach contents leak back, or reflux, into the esophagus. The LES is a ring of muscle at the bottom of the esophagus that acts like a valve between the esophagus and stomach. The esophagus carries food from the mouth to the stomach. When refluxed stomach acid touches the lining of the esophagus, it causes a burning sensation in the chest or throat called heartburn. The fluid may even be tasted in the back of the mouth, and this is called acid indigestion.
