Now the challenge is to keep on growing. Rebecca Sugar has been building new worlds for as long as she can remember. As a kid growing up in Baltimore, Maryland, she and her younger brother Steven would draw out fantasy stories. For Rebecca, it felt like an escape from normality. Then Cartoon Network made her its first female showrunner with the launch of Steven Universe — a groundbreaking, coming-of-age animation series that deals with gender, sexuality and human interaction with rare subtlety and humour. The show is situated halfway between this world and another. Together, as the Crystal Gems, the magical beings are determined to defend Earth from maleficent forces.

Some of the above racially insensitive missteps have been deal breakers for former fans, and have lost the show viewers. It included this image of a character named Concrete. It was then passed around for others to comment on. The character is not even going to appear in the show. Abrams offered his apology without implicating the person who wrote the notes out of concern that person would then be harassed by the wrath of those who found the image offensive. It is important to remind viewers and readers alike that a person can have the best intentions, they can try their best to avoid racial bias, but racism is a centuries-old systemic problem , so people can do racist things without intent, or completely by accident. Intent is not magic, and intent does not negate racism when it appears.
Snot poured out of my nose — as it always does when I cry — and I huffed into a tissue. I had been planning to tell my therapist about Steven Universe and Garnet, but I had no idea how much it was going to rock me to my core to say those words out loud. Once she knew what I was talking about, we returned to my identification with Garnet. As a fusion, Garnet is comprised of two Gems, Ruby and Sapphire. After the two meet while on a colonizing mission on Earth, they accidentally fuse, forming something no one has ever seen before: a fusion of two different Gems.

In its fourth-year run, the Cartoon Network series Steven Universe has garnered critical attention and kudos for exploring themes of queerness, identity, and intersectional feminism, all while keeping family audiences firmly in mind. As ageless gemstones with projections of humanoid forms, the Crystal Gems have spent the past 5,plus years battling the interstellar empire that created them and kept them subservient in a completely hierarchical society called Homeworld. The dictator-like and colonizing Diamonds at the top of the stratified Gem society inform how the rebel Crystal Gems themselves navigate their positions of power and autonomy—their positionality—in relation to Steven, other Gems, and other beings across the galaxies. The Diamonds force-fuse hundreds of Gems into a giant Cluster at the core of the Earth , intent on making the planet a Homeworld geo-weapon. The Earth colonized by the Diamonds is divided two Kindergartens, where the Diamonds created soldiers to carry out their colonizing mission.
