Rachel Goossen, Professor of History Henderson Peace, Justice and Conflict Resolution Studies is an interdisciplinary program of study, building on existing course offerings in a range of departments, that incorporates both international peace and justice issues, and through internship opportunities with community-based agencies, local dimensions of conflict resolution. To earn the minor Students will combine core courses in Peace Studies with elective courses from departments across campus that share a common theme of peace, justice, and conflict resolution. To earn the minor, a student must complete at least 18 hours of course work, 15 hours of designated core courses and 3 hours of electives. The minor will be supervised by a committee of advisors and coordinated by the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Interested students will always have the option of doing individualized readings with faculty in a number of departments and can also complete a capstone major project.

Core concepts of the interdisciplinary social science field of conflict analysis and resolution CAR are discussed. Work in the field is based on numerous generally accepted ideas about the nature of conflict and constructive approaches to conflict. These ideas include ways of waging conflicts constructively, tracing the interconnectedness of conflicts, and assessing the multiplicity of actors. Other important core concepts relate to stages of conflicts: emergence, escalation, de-escalation and settlement, and sustaining peace. Finally, current and future issues regarding CAR conceptualizations and their applications are examined. By listing these foundational, basic concepts in this first week, we do not mean to imply that there are no other theoretical or practical insights available in the field. A basic understanding of the literature and the subsequent units in this course however requires an initial understanding of these concepts. They provide models and frameworks through which you can analyse conflicts.

This course introduces the dynamics of conflict and peace and examines the causes of conflict. It emphasizes the changing nature of contemporary conflicts as well as the changing nature of international responses to them. It is a concentrated course with huge number of case studies and concepts to absorb. General objective: The course seeks to provide basic knowledge and understanding of peace and conflict studies in general, and develop conflict sensitivity and conflict mapping skills through huge number of case studies in particular. It seeks to offer students concepts and theories to analyse conflicts, develop and support arguments, and learn to structure and write essays in a multidisciplinary way. Students apply their knowledge and understanding to current issues, through acquired oral and written skills. Understand peace-building as a political process embracing security, political, social, economic and psycho-social dimensions.
