What does it mean for a woman to try to gain power in a society that thrives on her subjugation? This is a harrowing hour of television. Instead it feels grotesque and unnecessary. At this point, what else do they have to lose? But the episode seems more interested in the torture Offred endures than in any violence she could enact herself.
We see June Elisabeth Moss shortly after she was separated from her family during their attempted escape. She and a bunch of other women are being herded into trucks, presumably to be taken to Red Centers and trained as handmaids. Cut to several years later, June is no longer that scared woman clinging to her chains in a cattle truck. Moss knows this as much as June does, and is acting her overconfident ass off. At one point, she tilts her head cockily to the side and admonishes Commander Lawrence for having the audacity to think he was ever in charge. It looks like the plan could maybe work, but it quickly goes out the window.
The trouble is you usually find it. But hey, she also gave her a music box or something, so clearly June has betrayed their sacred sisterhood! This requires the convenient fiction that June somehow had a choice, when Gilead was engineered specifically to take her choices away. Serena Joy knows that better than anyone anyone; she helped engineer it, after all. Despite all the lip service about godliness and traditional values, the true doctrine of Gilead — and patriarchy, full stop — is men having their cake and eating it too.

It makes for a fitting endpoint for this episode run and could have easily worked as a series finale had the show ended here. The giveaway? Makeup on the collar of her cloak. And in this time, finally, her prayers are answered: Offred is pregnant. Serena Joy also confronts the Commander, albeit with less bodily harm. He reminds her about that pesky rule about women and reading. She remembers — she helped write it.
