Some forums can only be seen by registered members. We had a plumber tell us that putting a big cup full of crushed salt pellets would keep the roots from clogging the sewer line. He said to put a cup down each toilet before bedtime and flush. Do that at least once a month. I wonder if anybody else has done this? We have a willow that I know must be the culprit and I really don't want to get rid of the tree. You can buy Copper Sulfate crystals and use them every 6 months to keep roots out of the sewer system.
I have huge amount of roots in the pipes. I'm looking for a source of copper sulphate but affordable. When I put the copper sulphate in the drain- I assume it will be distributed in the pipe but unfortunately only at the bottom of the pipe. I tried to speak with Iron Out people about this but was difficult to get an answer. When these blue granules are in the pipes, they stick to the cracks and they dissolve gradually but some of them will be flushed away?

Copper sulfate crystals are used to kill roots that may clog sewer lines. The chemical only kills roots that it directly contacts and does not travel up the roots to kill plants nor does it kill beneficial bacteria in septic tanks. It is a toxic chemical, however, and you should care not to ingest it or get it on your skin or in your eyes. You can buy copper sulfate crystals at most garden supply centers and many drug stores. It is better to space the small treatments over a two-week period than to give the roots a single large dose on one day.
Copper sulfate pentahydrate also known as copper sulphate pentahydrate or simply copper sulfate or copper sulphate is the chemical used to grow bright blue copper sulfate crystals. It's easy to find online, but there are shipping restrictions to some locations, plus the weight of the chemical typically makes shipping comparable to the price of the chemical. Fortunately, copper sulfate is a useful chemical that you may be able to find in a store I found copper sulfate at Home Depot as Zep Root Killer, which is labeled as copper sulfate pentahydrate and is sold with septic tank and drain cleaning chemicals not with other garden root killers or with other plumbing chemicals. This product contains solid granules of copper sulfate.
