Generally, you will see this difference when you intend to install the door by yourself or purchase it by yourself but have someone else install it. Knowing the difference between the two categories of doors is crucial. If you purchase the wrong type of door, it may not fit your doorframe or you might encounter other difficulties with installation. A pre-hung door is intended by the manufacturer to be a nearly complete package. Pre-hung doors are tightly bundled into their included frames with polyester tension packing straps and plastic spacers to prevent them for shifting or twisting during shipment.

A door has two frames. A finish frame has a top jamb and two side jambs that have hinges and latches to hold the door in place. A rough frame is part of the wall, usually made of 2-byinch lumber and always slightly larger than the finish frame. You can install a new door to replace an old or damaged door in two ways: Use a "prehung" door already set into a finish frame to replace the old door and jambs, or use the existing jambs and set a new door into the hinges. Either method requires some carpentry skill. Remove the trim molding around the existing door, on both sides of the wall, with a pry bar. Knock the pins out of the hinges with a nail set or punch and a hammer, and lift the door out.
