If you are a smoker, your entire body's health is compromised. As far as oral health, smoking can cause oral cancer, periodontal disease, acceleration of gum disease, bad breath, stained teeth, poor tooth movement for teeth to move well and reposition during orthodontic treatment, the tissues that attach the teeth to the gums and bone must be healthy ; the latter of these conditions are exacerbated by smoking while wearing braces. By not practicing proper oral hygiene each day while wearing braces, you set yourself up for irritated gums, infection and staining. Smoking will only make things worse.

If you want to use Invisalign bracing trays rather than standard braces to straighten your teeth and you're a smoker, you need to consider how your habit will affect your braces. While smoking typically won't prevent your braces from doing their job, it may give you cosmetic problems during your treatment. Unlike standard braces, Invisalign braces aren't fixed to your teeth. This kind of treatment uses removable clear trays which are regularly changed during the course of your treatment to correct the placement of your teeth over time. One of the big advantages of Invisalign over regular bracing is the fact that these clear trays aren't as obvious as braces that are attached to your teeth. However, these trays can have some cosmetic downsides, especially if you smoke. The materials used in Invisalign trays can become discoloured pretty easily — this is one of the reasons why you're told not to wear the trays when you eat and to avoid drinking highly coloured drinks when you're wearing your trays.
