False Prophets: Their Method, Manner and Motive

signs of a false prophet

Very few, if any, false teachers come into the church announcing their plans to lead Christ's sheep astray or proclaiming that they are there to overturn the gospel.

We are living in strange times when many are calling themselves apostles and prophets of God. The great challenge for the church is to properly discern those who are genuine from those who are false. The Bible warns us of a great increase in deception, specifically mentioning a great increase of false prophets within the Church see 1 John , Matthew , 2 Peter , 2 Corinthians Today, all over the world we are seeing people rising up and calling themselves prophets of God, so it is vital that we properly weed out the false from the true. We must note that the Bible teaches us that they will come claiming to represent Christ Matthew , Luke Just because they call themselves Christians or claim that Jesus is their Lord, it is not evidence that they are indeed the real thing. We must also make clear that miracles and detailed, accurate prophecies are no proof that they are indeed representing the Lord.

It has been said that imitation is the highest form of flattery, but it is also a form of deception. Satan's fall from heaven was fueled by his desire to be like God Isaiah — Since then he has counterfeited God's power in order to deceive mankind. As the Battle of Armageddon draws near, Satan's trickery will include imitation of God's signs and prophecies. The Old Testament prophet Elijah will return, but there will also be an impostor. We need to understand some details of Elijah's past ministry and future return to distinguish the end—times impostor from the authentic prophet of God.

By a false prophet I am referring to a person who is not only erroneous in some of their methodology, but in their motive and ambition. This is the kind of person I believe Jesus was referring to when He told His followers to beware of false prophets who come in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravening wolves Matt. I have heard of so-called prophets who will google the names of pastors and people they know they are going to minister to and then prophesy to them things already written about them online. Furthermore, they also go on the social media pages of the people they will minister to and garner specific personal and ministerial information about them. Unfortunately, most people are so gullible and so desperate to receive a word from the Lord they will likely not correlate what they wrote online with what they are hearing from the so-called prophet—or they will just think it was a confirmation of what they already wrote, sensed or said about themselves on social media. A person who gathers personal information to prophesy it to others is a false prophet in my book. Get Spirit-filled content delivered right to your inbox!

In religion, a false prophet is one who falsely claims the gift of prophecy or divine inspiration , or to speak for God, or who makes such claims for evil ends. Often, someone who is considered a "true prophet " by some people is simultaneously considered a "false prophet" by others, even within the same religion as the "prophet" in question. In a wider sense, it is anyone who, without having it, claims a special connection to the Deity and sets himself up as a source of spirituality, as an authority, preacher, or teacher. Analogously, the term is sometimes applied outside religion to describe someone who fervently promotes a theory that the speaker thinks is false. Throughout the New Testament , there are warnings of both false prophets and false Messiahs , and believers are adjured to be vigilant. The following verses Matthew are from the Sermon on the Mount :.

In these last days, Scripture warns that false prophets will arise and deceive many. Believers who are not well-grounded make easy targets for doctrines that may sound good but are filled with error. Some doctrines are deadly: those that alter the Deity of Christ, redefine the Trinity — or even deny the Trinity. Sometimes a charmer will lead the susceptible off into error that results in physical death — Jonestown and Waco come to mind. We must sharpen our awareness and be alert — not just for ourselves but for our loved ones who might otherwise be drawn to a false prophet. Have you noticed that apostasy and immorality go hand in hand? We hear news reports of a cult under the spell of a leader who, it is revealed, has been engaging in shocking immorality with members of his flock.
