He is reluctant to flee, but Merlin bewitches him into escaping with him, temporarily blocking his memory and dressing him as a peasant. Elyan, Gaius, and Gwaine are taken prisoner, though Morgana is impressed by Gwaine's performance in trials by combat. Separated from Leon and Percival, Merlin and Arthur fall in with smugglers Tristan and Isolde, during which Merlin's spell wears off and the young king can reveal his identity to them. The quartet escapes to Ealdor, Merlin's village, where a wounded Arthur is nursed by Guinevere as Agravaine and his army close in.
Arthur is waiting for his clothing, worried that he won't look particularly regal if he goes out in just his undergarments. Merlin, on the other hand, is concerned that the King may have trouble making his belt fit, and is gamely trying to skewer another hole into it before the King goes to host the latest banquet. As Arthur entertains guests whilst wallowing in Gwen's absence, Agravaine and Helios storm Camelot and bring Morgana into the castle, ready to take her seat on the throne. Quickly and efficiently overpowering Arthur's army with sheer numbers, it isn't long before the King is injured and forced to retreat to Gaius' surgery, whilst Percival goes missing and Gwaine and Elyan are captured. Camelot, it seems, is lost and Morgana sits on the throne. She's not happy, as she wants more. She wants Arthur and demands that the former King is brought to her, despatching Agravaine to complete the task.
The episode opens with Arthur preparing for the feast of Beltane. Outside, Agravaine throws what amounts to a stinkbomb into the midst of some Camelot guards. Looks like the plan he and Morgana made is coming to fruition now, eh? Which of course leads to Arthur threatening Merlin. They march into the courtyard and spread oil over everything, which allows Agravaine to drop a torch and set things ablaze. Inside, Arthur talks about how much he misses Gwen.
‘Merlin: The Sword In The Stone, Part 1’ – Recap
Merlin series 4 episode 12 review: The Sword In The Stone Part 1
Merlin smuggles Arthur out of the castle in disguise and joins a gang of rogues on their way to Ealdor. Creators Johnny Capps and Julian Murphy have said more than once that Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid is a huge influence on the show's dynamic and this is an episode where you can see it plainly. Our two heroes have an adventure together in the woods, on the run, getting into scrapes, bouncing off each other. There is even a classic "surrounded wagon" gunfight well, crossbow scene about 30 minutes in. With a solid mix of drama, pathos and humour, the episode showcases some superb acting and sets the scene for the coming finale.

I wish I could get the get the producers of this show - the Twu Lurve Obsessives I mean, not the other ones who know what they're doing - in a small room with a large bucket of haddock with which I could beat them repeatedly around the head.
