With its prominent location and mission, the design was subject to an intensive public review process. The white glass roof structure is translucent during the day and softly glows with light by night. The program includes administrative offices, research facilities including a library and an archive, a conference and negotiation center, and an interactive educational center dedicated to the theme of peacemaking. The headquarters has a dual life. On the one hand, it is a very public building. It incorporates ceremonial public spaces, an education center, a public space, a conference center, an auditorium, press rooms, and the like. On the other hand, there are more private, contemplative spaces, including a research center, where scholars can pursue their studies and prepare to share information throughout the world.
USIP is the independent, nonpartisan conflict management center created by Congress to prevent and mitigate international conflict without resorting to violence. USIP works to save lives, increase the government's ability to deal with conflicts before they escalate, reduce government costs, and enhance our national security.
United States Institute of Peace
It provides research, analysis, and training to individuals in diplomacy, mediation, and other peace-building measures. Following years of proposals for a national "peace academy", the USIP was established in by Congressional legislation signed into law by President Ronald Reagan. It is officially nonpartisan and independent, receiving funding only through congressional appropriation to prevent outside influence. The Institute is governed by a bipartisan board of directors with fifteen members—which must include the secretary of defense, the secretary of state, and the president of the National Defense University—who are appointed by the president and confirmed by the Senate. It currently employs around personnel and has trained more than 65, professionals since its inception.
