As soon as you step onto the water in Smouldering Lake you are bombarded with shots from a giant ballista. This article covers how to stop the ballista from firing on you so you can explore the watery area and defeat the Carthus Sandworm in peace. Before we head to the ballista it's important to pick up an item that you can't get after you stop the ballista from firing. Start at the Abandoned Tomb bonfire in the Catacombs of Carthus. Head through the cave ahead and into the Smouldering Lake area.
Join VIP to remove all ads and videos. Smouldering Lake is a Location in Dark Souls 3. This optional zone is the center of conflict between many ferocious creatures, with a deep laberynth built beneath flooded with lava and fire monsters, but exploring it will reveal pyromancies and tomes from ages past. Discovering Smouldering Lake takes a bit of work. Attack the anchor point at that end of the bridge and it will collapse; once it settles, you can climb down the bridge as if it were a ladder to access the area below.
As with Old Demon King, this entire area is optional — but it contains some good loot and a couple of key items which are very tempting for pyromancers. Standing at the Old Demon King boss gate looking towards the ballista, look to your left and spot a ramp leading upwards. Grab the Titanite Shard on your right and pass through the doorway to activate the Demon Ruins bonfire. These multi-limbed baddies attack with huge swords and fire spells, including one that creates a sort of fireball turret that hangs about lobbing projectiles at you. The demons wail when they cast these turrets, and you can either kill the demon or stick them with ranged attacks to clear them. Approach with caution. They often drop Titanite Shards.

It is a subsection of the Catacombs of Carthus. The Smouldering Lake is a shallow lake that lies deep underground. Enormous trees that smoulder with embers grow up to the ceiling and their roots reach far into the chambers below the lake. It has been known to be the remains of the once molten Lost Izalith , or an area adjacent to the lost city. After many years, the lava had subsided significantly; the evidence to this being the presence of the demon corpses that litter the ground in the Demon Ruins , which in Dark Souls was the area one would have to go though to reach Lost Izalith.
